On the night of the 11th/12th August 2017, Sergeant Matthew Hoare embarked on the 48th annual Dodentocht march. He would have to complete a total of 100km within 24hrs.
Between the 10th and 13th of August, Sgt Hoare and CWO White traveled to Bornem, Belgium. Sgt Hoare would undertake the march whilst CWO White provided logistical support. Whilst in Belgium, the pair seized the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of the Squadron and Committee, in remembrance of the people of Belgium and all those who lost their lives in the struggle for peace.
March off was at 2100, however due to the 13,030 walkers participating in the event, Sgt Hoare had to arrive at the start line 2 hours early. After a crowded start, Sgt picked up speed and tackled the event with an interval strategy, completing the 100km in 13hrs 8mins.
Sgt Hoare was glad that he had booked a hot meal for half way, allowing him respite before the final push. He was proud to have finished in a good time. Between the pair, the Squadron now holds 3 Wing records for Dodentocht: Fastest wing first time (Sqt Hoare, 13:08), Fastest first time (Sgt Hoare, 13:08) and Youngest finisher (CWO White, 16 years, 10 months, and 1 day).
